sunday, july 8

church this morning was awesome. we only went to for sacrament, and the kind ward in salzburg provided translations because our huge group doesn't understand any german. everyone was really nice.

after church we went to the inner city to a cathedral called the "dom" (means dome) which--go figure--has a big dome. the choir sang some songs and were blessed with quite a large crowd and even some heavenly shafts of light beaming down on them from the windows.

lauren and i had some free time after the mini-concert so we walked over to the catacombs built into the side of a cliff. we walked through st. peter's cemetery to get there, and it was the most beautiful cemetery i have ever seen.
all of the plots are tended by family members of the deceased, and they plant flowers and bushes and ivy of the the site so it looks like an english garden.
this cemetery inspired the guy who directed the sound of music; he wanted to film the scene in which the family is hiding in the cemetery here but the monks who tend it said no (you are not supposed to speak in it), so he built a replica on the fox backlot.

the catacombs were a little disappointing; just a staircase cut into the cliff up to a small room that is empty.stairs to the catacombsthe cliff and entrance to the catacombs from a window at the top of the stairsview of the dom and st. peter's from inside the cliff

after the catacombs we walked back to the big square by the dom. we wanted to play a game of chess on the giant chessboard, but it was being used, so we just sat and watched until dinner time.
after dinner, lauren and i took a leisurely stroll around downtown salzburg. i wanted a picture of me in front of the statue of mozart (salzburg is mozart's birthplace), but when we got there we found two people singing for money and 8 drunk guys singing along. the drunk guys were from california, and when they found out that lauren and i were from california, they wouldn't leave us alone. below is a picture of me and my new best friends:and here i am milking a red plastic cow. we had some good times. lots of walking around some more and then a rainstorm. we ducked into a small cafe and ordered hot chocolate and pastries and enjoyed the sound of the rain from inside. we finished and walked to the university cathedral where the choir was performing. i was pleasantly surprised at how many people showed up for the concert; we even saw the missionaries. after the concert we walked to the bus in the rain and then went to bed. poor jesus is being choked by the ivy.
